Broma Bakery’s Funfetti Cookies
I’ve made these cookies repeatedly throughout the year and they are always a hit. I’ve brought them to many of our community meetings and there are never any leftovers to take home. The rainbow sprinkles are cheerful and festive, whether it’s for a holiday cookie party or a summer barbeque. Sarah (aka Broma Bakery) is delightful, and she develops delicious baking recipes. She has an awesome assortment on her website bromabakery.com (check out the tahini banana bread). She re

"For the Birds": Music, Poetry, and Climate Awareness in Leschi
Leschi residents were treated to a unique blend of music, science, and storytelling last month when former neighbors Nelda and Clif Swiggett returned to share their multimedia program, For the Birds —an intimate performance exploring how climate change is reshaping the lives of migratory birds in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Hosted in the home of Deidre Silva and Michael McCahill, who generously opened their doors and provided plant-based appetizers for guests, the eveni

Make Merry and Support Leschi Elementary School
Once again, the BluWater Bistro is holding its end-of-year annual fundraising effort for Leschi Elementary. You can donate any amount, but if you buy a $100 gift card to the restaurant, BluWater will make a matching donation of $100 to the school. This is the fifth year BluWater has supported neighborhood students and the waterfront Leschi eatery has now donated over $50,000 to the school since 2020. The goal is to match last year’s $10,000 gift, and Bart Evans and his staff

Two Ways of Exploring Nature: Gaylen Hansen and Alan Lau
A painting of a giant grasshopper standing on a rock invites us into the Woodside Braseth Gallery for an exhibition of Gaylen Hansen, age 104. As we enter the gallery we see a swarm of bright blue fish with intense red eyes, mouths open and teeth bared. Turning to the right we see a red wall with irregular bricks and large grasshoppers climbing on it. But the painting is titled “Red Wall Two Ducks.” I asked the gallery owner where the ducks were and he said, “Behind the wall.

"Wildflowers of the West" by Molly Hashimoto
What a joy! A beautiful new Molly Hashimoto book in time for holiday giving! This book is much more ambitious than the recent books we have reviewed which maintained a focus on Mt. Rainer. This book covers the wildflowers of the entire West through all the climate zones from Alpine to Desert, including the shoreline regions. I selfishly zoomed to the places where I had been, sometimes only once, but I had experienced something extraordinary that I would never forget. One was

Packed House for Leschi Election Forum
On October 14th, the Leschi Community Council, in partnership with the Central Area Neighborhood District Council (CANDC), hosted a dynamic and well-attended election forum. Nearly 80 community members gathered to hear directly from candidates shaping Seattle and King County’s future and was a huge increase from last year’s turnout. The event was moderated by Essex Porter, longtime journalist formerly with NPR and KIRO 7 and a proud Leschi resident. Rather than a traditional

A Community Council Renaissance: Connecting Across Seattle
Over the past several months, the Leschi Community Council has been meeting with other community councils around Seattle—including those in Montlake, Mt. Baker, Madrona, Madison Park, Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, and Downtown. These one-on-one conversations have been both inspiring and energizing, offering a chance to share resources, lessons learned, challenges, and priorities. These meetings also give us a platform to discuss broader issues, share strategies, and explore ways
